What is Feldenkrais®?

The Feldenkrais Method® was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais as a method to access our body’s unique ability to heal itself, through movement. It can be described as a highly sophisticated form of neuromuscular re-education, based on the scientific principle of neuroplasticity. This simply means that we are capable of changing and learning new patterns of moving, sensing, feeling and thinking during the course of our entire lifetime.

How can Feldenkrais® help me?

The Feldenkrais Method® can help you decrease aches and pains, increase your strength and flexibility, improve your balance, coordination, and posture while you also eliminate stress and fatigue. Feldenkrais® can also help you recover more quickly from trauma, injuries, increase your energy and endurance as well as improve your mobility and quality of life.

How does Feldenkrais® work?

Feldenkrais® is a gentle but powerful process of self-education. It is a process of learning, which allows you to gently interrupt patterns of moving which may be causing pain, stress, joint dysfunction, immobility, or interfering with your quality of life. Feldenkrais® is different from other therapeutic modalities because there is no “protocol” or predetermined list of exercises. Instead, the focus is on exploring new patterns of movement through your own personal experience. It is a method where you discover for yourself how to move without pain, strain, stress, and effort.

Why is Feldenkrais® so effective?

In traditional therapies, the emphasis is placed on the practitioner “fixing the patient” or “correcting the problem.” In Feldenkrais®, the focus is placed on paying attention to yourself and the quality of your movement. In Feldenkrais®, there is no good or bad, right or wrong, better or worse; just opportunities to learn. You get to find what you could do, instead of someone telling you what you should do. It is a very empowering experience.

What training does a Feldenkrais® practitioner have?

To become a practitioner requires successful completion of a four year long training program. The program involves intense study, practice and practical application of the method developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais. A typical training program is structured to include two weeks of training (full-time), every three months for four years. At the end of the training, the student must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in teaching Feldenkrais® as well and applying the principles to a variety of different populations. They must also demonstrate a thorough understanding of the human nervous system, skeletal structure, and movement analysis. Candidates who do not meet the high standards required of a practitioner do not graduate and are not granted certification.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises developed by Joseph H. Pilates as an extremely effective and efficient method to strengthen, lengthen, shape, tone, balance and sculpt your entire body. The exercises are designed in a sequential manner to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture while increasing body awareness and mental function.

How can Pilates help me?

Pilates is an ideal method to help you achieve a higher level of fitness while you re-balance your muscles and properly align your skeletal structure. It will help you recover from injuries, decrease back, neck and joint pain. Everyone from the low level pain patient to the elite athlete or performing artist can improve their level of fitness, strength, flexibility and function with Pilates.

What makes Pilates so effective?

In Pilates, every movement has a purpose and is done with careful attention and mindfulness. This approach activates the smaller, weaker muscles of the body that are not engaged during traditional exercise programs. Conventional exercise targets the bigger, more powerful muscles of the body. The result is that these muscles get bigger and stronger, while the smaller muscles continue to get weaker, resulting in muscle imbalances causing pain and stiffness. Pilates brings the muscles, the skeletal structure, and the respiratory system into perfect harmony.

What is therapeutic exercise?
